I’m a 68 year old woman and even though it took 2 1/2 hours to assemble, (my fault) I put one drawer together backwards. It was pretty easy.I put a clear coat of sealing wax to protect it and hand painted the design I saw on a blog I’ve always admired. And resealed the drawers and top a second coat.As someone suggested I also used wood glue on all the nails and dowels.Very sturdy and pleased with the results and product.

This is my second purchase of an International Concept piece of furniture. While they do not offer a line of upscale hardwood products also, this line is beautiful and solid wood to work with. The directions do not say to do this, but I recommend using wood glue before joining with the screws provided. Do not over use glue. A little goes a long way, but it's use will ensure your product is durable and sturdy for many years. I upgraded my knobs for a custom look and will white wash the wood before adding a satin finish. Normally I do not write reviews, but the company deserves kudos.

My husband and I are reviewing two pieces of International Concepts furniture. Models BD-8003 (Brooklyn 3 drawer chest) and BD-8013 (Brooklyn 3 drawer nightstand), both unfinished. They arrived with no damage and all pieces accounted for. We were very impressed with the quality and look of the wood. Everything is real Parawood (look it up) except for the back panels, drawer frames and bottoms which are laminated plywood. Assembly went very well and amazingly square (I used a framing square to check everything). All holes are pre-drilled except for the chest where the drawer bottom brace gets screwed into the front and back pieces and where the back brace piece screws into the sides. I pre-drilled them myself to keep from splitting the plywood and we would advise anyone else to do the same. We would also suggest that you check square on everything before completely tightening the bolts and screws. The ONLY problem we ran into is the brace in the back center of the chest (see the picture). The dowel pin holes were drilled with the wrong spacing on both sides, or the holes were wrong on both ends of the brace piece. This piece also gets a screw in each end so I merely removed the dowel pins and proceeded with the assembly. I called the phone number listed in the instructions to ask about this problem and found out that they will only send missing hardware and that a wood problem would require returning the cabinet for exchange or refund. That was very disappointing. All-in-all, we would strongly recommend these furniture pieces to anyone interested.Read more

The side panels, drawers fronts, and top are all solid wood. The drawer bottoms and back panels are cheap plywood. Overall I like it and look forward to finishing it off in my desired scheme but if you have kids beware that this needs to be anchored. That’s my biggest annoyance with the dresser is that it wobbles from side to side (see video) and I have double and triple checked all of the supports and bolts to ensure everything is tight.

I ordered 2 of these. One came damaged, but Amazon sent another one as a replacement. Unfortunately, I have to send the damaged one back, instead of just receiving a replacement part. (I know the logistics would be too complicated for a custom replacement part). The box is really heavy and packed tightly and carefully by the manufacturer, so it will be nontrivial to repack it and drop it off at a UPS.Fortunately, I did not send the damaged item back yet, because I notice that the drawer slides were also damaged, I was able to cannibalize additional spare parts. I also noticed that some parts (the back of the drawers) were not the right size (too wide), which is very strange since the other parts were identical. I also notice that across the 3 packages, 2 of them had a long strips of wood as the chest top, but 1 of them had a butch block pattern, so again I was kept the 2 that matched.I was able to successfully polyurethane the parawood very nicely. It was important to sand between applications because the parawood became uneven as some pieces absorbed the polyurethane and left the surface gritty as the wood expanded. It looks really beautiful now though. Better (more beautiful and sturdy) than pine by a mile and a great value compared to oak. Finally, I found the drawers did not assemble evenly, although I followed the pilot holes carefully, when attaching the screws. I had to move drawers around at different positions, or else the gap between drawers looked uneven. Ultimately, I ended up having to shim the sliders for one drawer (to raise it about .75mm or 1/32in), and also shim a slider that was attached to the inside of the cabinet to get it to close evenly. (it tended to veer to one side so it would close flush)So given all this work and also replacing the wooden knobs with chrome knobs, the results were very nice. It just takes a little bit more work to get professional looking results.I would 100% recommend for International Concepts chairs and benches, since those do not have moveable parts. Those are absolutely solid. I also bought 2 night stands, they look great, but again, the drawer sliders needed shimming to look perfectly even, so I would not recommend IC furniture with drawers unless you are a experienced drawer tweaker.Read more
